Albums of The Year for 2021

Alrighty (cracks typing fingers) it's that time of year again, list season! I personally look forward to this time of year and reading everyone's lists. There's always great new music for me discover :)

Oh man was this year was hard for me to narrow down because there was just so much good material that came out! I think the holdback from 2020 really gave us some gems in 2021, as bands had more time to work on new material and make the albums that much better. One trend that I noticed with my list is that many of the releases are (in my opinion) the bands best release to date. That is a very exciting thing for me to say!

To be honest this list was remade too many times for me to count but I enjoyed the challenge of coming up with the final cut! Without much further ado, here's a small blurb on each album.

10. Turnstile-Glow On

As someone who doesn't listen to hardcore music typically, Glow On completely caught me off guard with how catchy and addicting it is. I think this has been the story for a few people, judging from reviews I have read. Glow On by Turnstile may very well be the catalyst to me getting into hardcore music and, just for that reason alone, it gets to be on my list. I highly recommend watching this live video (especially the ending), to showcase how special this band really is.

9. Teenage Wrist-The Earth is a Black Hole

I have been following Teenage Wrist since 2018 and have been wanting to make a blog post about them for sometime now. The Earth is a Black Hole is that complete banger of an album that I have been waiting for and am very excited to have this on my list! I will say more in a full blog post but for now I will say if you like alterative rock from the 90s then this is a HIGH recommend. Yellowbelly

8. PÆRISH-Fixed it All

Ok so you know how I said I've been following Teenage Wrist since 2018? Well I have been following PÆRISH since 2016 and, to be honest, was not sure if I would ever see a new album from them (due to seeing no updates from the group). To my utter joy, they started releasing singles in 2020 and in 2021 we got Fixed it All. This release showed musical progression from the band but still kept those fabulous power pop hooks I fell in love with. It gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from this fan! Archives

7. Origami Angel-Gami Gang

Listen to this album synopsis: a two piece DIY band records a double album in their room and titles it after the nickname fans give them. That has to at least pipe your interest right? Good or bad, that's a full commitment to the idea. Origami Angel have already proven that they can nail a concept album, so I had hope they can stick the landing with this double album. Holly shit did they ever deliver! It's Mother F*ing Gami Gang! Mach Bike

6. Pale Waves-Who Am I?

Right from looking at Who Am I's album art, which looks like a combination of Avril Lavigne's Let Go and Save the Day's Through Being Cool, I had an idea what this album was going for (with giddy anticipation). I throw this album on I can directly transport myself to the 2000s pop rock era, where we had badasses like Alanis Morsette, Liz Phair, and Avril. What more can I say here? This is an era I grew up with and adored, and I'm excited to see a band that shares the same love I do!  Fall to Pieces

5. The Dirty Nil-Fuck Art

Some god damn great rock n roll here! This album stuck with me all year since January; I even bought the vinyl (which is a rad bright pink). Check these guys out live if you can, I can see them doing great things in the future! Damage Control

4. Sincere Engineer-Bless My Psyche

Deanna has done it again with Bless My Psyche. I absolutely love this album front to back and I honestly think this is Sincere Engineer's best work to date. Their debut was a stellar album so this is pretty high praise from me. The songs are that much catchier and gut punching- my god it's so fantastic. I honestly hope that Sincere Engineer become the next big act, like their heroes the Lawrence Arms. Dragged across the finish line

3. Tigers Jaw-I Won't Care How You Remember Me

Tigers Jaw is the oldest running band in my list and have likely influenced many of the mentioned artists. It's awesome seeing a band still kicking ass in their scene. I've already talked about I Won't Care How You Remember Me at decent length here. What I can add is that this album has only continued to grow on me throughout the year and now here it is at the number 3 spot! Hesitation

2. Lakes-Matches

So who has managed to beat Tigers Jaw you may wonder (or not)? Well, that spot would belong to a band that has many similarities to Tigers Jaw called Lakes. Both bands have come up from DIY roots and have both male and female vocalists. Lakes is a younger band but are full of promise. There's more to read about Matches here. One more big thanks to David, from the band Gulfer, on shouting them out and getting me into Lakes! No Excuses

1. Jail Socks-Coming Down

Alright guys we made it! Who made it to the tipy top? It's no other then Jail Socks! The album Coming Down never wavered in being my number one album. Spotify wrapped confirmed that I within the top 0.5% of their listeners, which I guess means I listened a lot? Not only were they my top artist in 2021 but they were also in 2020 haha. I literally listened to Coming Down for any activity and anytime of the year. If I was not sure what to listen to, this album was picked. Before you ask, yes I do have a blog post about this album- what a surprise eh? Anyways I must have hyped this up enough by now right? Give Coming Down a listen and cheers to 2022 everyone! :D  Sick Weather
