Basement-I Wish I Could Stay Here (2011)

Why I Like it:

Well folks *cracks open my pumpkin beer* we're in the mist of fall, which means it's time for fall season albums! And just like the seasonal pumpkin beer, I need those sad boi songs that go so well with the brisk mornings and dying foliage. Although, I don't like just any sad boy songs. Kinda like my craft pumpkin beer (I swear I won't use this beer comparison for the whole review), there's certain flavors and quality that will get me into the vibes. Side note- I tried asking ChatGPt for better words than "vibes" but nothing seemed to stick. Thanks for nothing AI...ya lets blame the computer for my lack of vocabulary. Ok ok, let's get off this trainwreck paragraph and onto some talk about this flipping album already, good grief.

The album I Wish I Could Stay Here has the whole package that embodies melancholily fall. Just start by looking at that fantastic album art. At fist glance, you see a person doing a Charlie Brown, which is leaning onto a structure with your chin on your crossed arms and staring longingly out into the nothing. A closer look though, you will see a different scene, within the cement structure and person's backpack, that depicts a nice desert background. It's a neat trick that instantly gets my attention and sets the stage for what's to come.

What's to come is an atmosphere of longing, crap weather, and lack of daylight. Pretty bleak right? Ya it is but the fast paced, hardcore tinged, music that then breaks into the slower fuzzy guitars acts as a warm blanket to accompany the biting cold.

I enjoy how I Wish I Could Stay Here starts, which uses a movie clip from An Affair To Remember, before the guitars and drums blast into your ears through the song "Fading". Overall the album's lyrics are pretty straightforward and get the points across, but it's more how they are sung that gets the feelings evoked. Also, I'm not always one for a musical interlude but the song "Ellipses" work perfectly, in my opinion, to let you breath and chill for a sec before the album picks right back up with "Every Single Word". Like that album cover, there's more to the surface level of I Wish I Could Stay Here

Overall, this is my favorite Basement album. Their following album Colourmeinkindness is fantastic as well but it doesn't feel like a complete album, with a start to finish flow, and it more has a collection of just sick songs. So check that out too if you liked I Wish I Could Stay Here

To cap things off, I think I'll end this section of the blog with a Charlie Brown quote: "I think I’ve discovered the secret of life – you just hang around until you get used to it."

Highlighted song and lyrics:

Crickets Throw Their Voice- "I still compare everything to your silhouette. How can I forget what is perfect?"

*Fun fact this song also has the album title within their album. Call me basic, but I love when a band does this!*
